    ABOUT THIS PRINT

In 1762 the burning political issue of the time was ‘peace’. Should Britain, who were attaining victory after victory on battlefields and oceans across the world, bring their great contest for imperial supremacy with the French to an end? King George and his prime minister, Lord Bute, thought so. The war was expensive and to prosecute it indefinitely would likely be ruinous. But their policy for opening negotiations with the French provoked outrage. To popularise the ministry’s position Bute employed the famous artist Hogarth to produce a series of works. This one appeared at the height of the quarrel in September 1762. It shows the king, standing on a plinth, attempting to extinguish a destructive fire. His enemies (principally John Wilkes who sprays the king from a garret window) attempt to hinder him. The print is packed with chaotic political action. – Peter Moore
