ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH

This colourised image, which is made from an original kept in the Library of Congress, captures an intriguing moment of creation. Everyone is familiar with the State of Liberty. It is a powerful symbol of the West. It stands in an imposing position inside New York Harbour, a short distance from the southerly tip of Manhattan Island. While people can readily call to mind the outline of the statue today, few will have seen inside the workshop of Gaget, Gauthier & Co, in Paris, where it was created. The original photograph was taken sometime between 1881-3 and it shows the workmen busy with their tools. There is much to study here: the labourers clothes, their characters, the great arm of liberty stretching out bizarrely behind them. The whole scene is illuminated by glossy Parisian lights. – Peter Moore
